The Paramount Garments Senior Rugby Championship is dishing out the best in terms of entertainment, with giants Old Georgians registering a big win, while new boys, Pitbulls fired early warning shots.
After getting a bye in the first weekend, Old Georgians played in front of their home fans and took advantage of familiar territory to wallop UZ Stallions 57-17 in the senior challenge.
It was a try fest, as the home side showed why they have been a force in domestic rugby after outclassing the students in the match of the day.
Old Georgians are aiming for a domestic double after their juniors’ side won the Paramount Garments Under-20 League.
The massive win saw Old Georgians securing a bonus point victory which lifted them to the summit of the Paramount Garments Senior Championship log standings.
Old Georgians are one of the four teams in the eight-team league with five points alongside Old Hararians, Harare Sports Club and Pitbulls.
In other matches, Pitbulls put all teams on notice after a 25-10 win over Police Defenders.
Pitbulls have only had an Under -20 side that won six consecutive titles before they were dethroned by Old Georgians earlier this year.
In the Women’s League, defending champions FS Raiders kicked off their season with a dominant 83-0 thrashing of Old Hararians, while OGs Pitbulls secured a 63-10 victory against Hacliffe.
In men’s Division One results, Old Georgians’ third-string side, OGs Barbarians beat XP Horns 49-8, while Northern Chiefs secured a 53-24 win over Southern City.
Elsewhere, Olympic hopeful, Rutendo Nyahora finished 13th in the Vienna Marathon in a time of two hours 36 minutes and seven seconds.
Nyahora is one of several long-distance runners who are looking at making the qualification time for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
So far, only Isaac Mpofu has made the qualification time for the Paris games.
