Sudan commits to regional cooperation to end current crisis

Story by Bruce Chahwanda, Political Editor

Sudan has assured Zimbabwean citizens safe passage out of the war torn North African country amid revelations that Zimbabweans have already been evacuated to a safe place.

According to the latest update by the government of Sudan, foreign nationals including Zimbabweans living in the conflict riddled areas surrounding Khartoum, have been moved to a safe location.

Sudanese special envoy to Zimbabwe Mr Elwaleed Abdalla said his government has taken all the necessary steps to guarantee the safety of foreign nationals.

“I was talking to the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Sudan) to arrange the safe movement of Zimbabwean nationals. We arranged for them to be moved from Sudan,” he said.

“Yesterday, the Ambassador and all Zimbabweans were moved from Sudan to Jada safely and expect them to arrive home safely.”

The Sudanese government says it is working on resolving the crisis which has affected thousands of people mainly in the capital, Khartoum where critical infrastructure has been destroyed.

“The government of Sudan is determined to enhance cooperation with its regional and international partners in the fields of regional peace and security, countering terrorism and combating illegal immigration and transnational organised crime,” noted Mr Abdalla.

Over 400 people have died and more than 4000 others injured since the Sudanese conflict erupted with thousands of civilians being displaced.

The conflict started nearly two weeks ago when the army and the paramilitary clashed in the capital and some southern parts of the North African country.
