Students design scientific experiments offline app

Story by Mercy Bofu

THE country’s Education 5.0 model is bearing fruit through producing innovative minds.

This comes after Ndarama High School students from Masvingo designed an application that ensures science experiments can be carried out offline.

The five students who are in Form 2 and 3 formed a company called Mobile Intelligence Technologies (MI-Tech) and came up with a science application called (Mi-Lab) which enables students to carry out scientific experiments on their mobile phones or computer devices operating offline.

MI-Tech chief executive officer Anesu Ruzive said the aim was to ensure students carry out science experiments even outside laboratories.

“We came up with this application cognisant of the socio-economic barriers, location and the digital gap because it can be accessed on all Android phones and even at home one can carry out scientific experiments hence making it easier to learn,” said Ruzive.

The students programmed the MI-Lab application with assistance from other programming experts.

Production Director Mobile Intelligence Technologies Production director, Prosper Dzinavatonga said, “We have got our production team, they are the ones who came up with this application. However, we engaged experts to assist us since we do not have enough expertise.”

MI-Tech Company had an opportunity to represent the country at the recently held Regional Junior Achievement Awards in Rwanda and bagged the first position.

“After winning the national Junior Achievement Awards we represented the country in Rwanda which was running under the theme, ‘Breaking Barriers’. We managed to scoop the US$1 000 grand prize, trophy and certificates,” MI-TECH Technologies finance director, Tapiwa Chuma.

Government says Ndarama students are proving young people’s capabilities through innovation.

“As Masvingo, we are proud of Ndarama students it shows that we are going in the right direction if we are producing such students with innovative minds. It also shows the capabilities of our youths,” said the Masvingo District Schools Inspector, Mr Ismael Chigaba.

The MI-TECH team is set to defend the trophy for Africa in 2024.
