A conference for women liberation fighters in Southern Africa has kicked off in Maputo, Mozambique with Zimbabwe represented.

The Conference dubbed: “HER Story: Heroines in the Liberation Struggles in Southern Africa,” kicked off with several women liberation war fighters from the region in attendance.

Speaking on the sidelines of the conference, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa highlighted the importance of educating youths about African history.

“I am an ex-combatant myself, who crossed into this country Mozambique at the height of the liberation struggle. This country played an important role in the liberation of Zimbabwe and several other African countries. Our children born after the struggle need to be educated about this, hence the importance of this conference and efforts to document this history,” she said.

The conference has been organised by UNESCO’s Regional Office for Southern Africa (ROSA) with the support of the Mozambican Government and the Southern African Research and Documentation Centre (SARDC).

It will run until this Friday.
