The installation of solar systems at health centres in Hwange District under the Solar for Health Project has enhanced service delivery in the district, as the government targets universal health coverage.
Vision 2030 envisages an affordable and efficient health delivery system, hence initiatives such as the provision of solar power at health centres like Chisuma Clinic are viewed as a significant stride towards the attainment of that goal.
The clinic, located in Hwange District, under Chief Mvuthu, is one of the 18 beneficiaries of the Solar for Health Project in the area.
Beneficiaries are grateful for the project being implemented by the government and its development partners.
Said a beneficiary, “There is now an uninterrupted power supply at the clinic, this is good for us, no more candles in case of a blackout.”
Another said, “The solar project is handy as it will also help in pumping water and powering staff houses here.”
“The solar project is critical as it also helps in ensuring continuous power supply to critical areas of the clinic such as maternity ward as well as storage of key medical supplies,” another noted.
Nurse-in-Charge, Sister Cecilia Likubo and Hwange District Medical Officer, Dr Fungai Musinami highlighted the importance of the solar project.
Sister Likubo said, “We are grateful for the solar project there is no more usage of candles at night in case of power cuts. This ensures safe delivery of expecting mothers and a conducive working environment for us.”
“This is an ongoing project to have solar power supplies to health facilities as a backup and as the primary source in some facilities. It started in 2021 and only three health centres are outstanding in the district,” said Mr Musinami.
Chisuma Clinic has a catchment area of two wards namely Chidobe and Kachechete which consists of six villages.
