THE death toll from the road traffic accident which occurred in Mabvuku, Harare Tuesday evening has risen to six after one of the victims died on the way to the hospital.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the number of people who died in a road traffic accident which occurred along Donnybrook Road in Mabvuku.
Police Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi told ZBC News that five people died on the spot when two commuter omnibuses were involved in an accident with a heavy truck while the sixth died on the way to the hospital.
“It is very sad that the number of the deceased people at an accident which happened along Donnybrook Road accumulated to six. Names of the victims will be released in due course. We are urging members of the public to exercise extreme caution on the roads and to be vigilant all the time to avoid loss of life. Motorists should adhere to road rules and regulations, especially during this time when most roads in the country are in good. People must complement government effort and preserve life on the road always.”
Those who witnessed the accident shared their grief.
“We were moving to our workplace when we encountered the accident. I think something should be done on this road like establishing speed humps,” said one of the witnesses.
Another said, “It was very pathetic, we are now realising that more should be done on these roads. I think people should drive safely these days especially when our roads are in good shape as they are at the moment.”
“We are appealing to the MP to attend this road in terms of enhancing safety. Since the rehabilitation of the road, many accidents have been happening most of which go unnoticed or recorded. The road needs to be re-looked at,” added another witness.
The government is carrying out a massive road rehabilitation programme across the country as part of efforts to reduce road carnage.
