Science, Technology and Innovation critical in human capital development, says VP Chiwenga

THE Government has reiterated the centrality of science, technology and innovation in human capital development for the attainment of Vision 2030.

The 2023 Zimbabwe Career Guidance Expo was attended by universities, students and corporates.

Vice President General Retired Dr Constantino Chiwenga, who represented President Emmerson Mnangagwa at the expo, said prioritising human capital development in line with the current and future needs of the country is critical for the attainment of the national vision.

“Science, technology and innovation remain critical for the development of our economy. The National vision can only be realised through well-informed human capital with career paths relevant to the current and future needs of Zimbabwe.

“The importance of this event can therefore not be over-emphasized as the nation seeks to value-add the vast natural resources that our country is endowed with. The students we see today are our future human capital. Some of them will be teachers, engineers, pilots, doctors, scientists, lawyers and artists among other professions,” he said.

Students and other stakeholders were warned against engaging in drug and substance abuse.

“As you are aware, currently, the country is facing the scourge of drug and substance abuse among our youths. Our schools and colleges have become havens for the trading and use of drugs.

“I want to warn all those who are abusing youths in this manner to desist forthwith. It is a fact that clear career paths for our youths give them purpose and prevent them from engaging in unproductive and destructive tendencies,” said the Vice President.

“I urge all youths to stop being used and exposed to the harmful effects of drugs. The government through various stakeholders has instituted measures to bust drug cartels and traffickers. To all those dealing in illicit drugs, be warned that your days are numbered as the long arm of the law will soon catch up with you,” he said.

With 2023 being an election year, Vice President Chiwenga also implored stakeholders to desist from engaging in violence to ensure the country remains on track in terms of socio-economic development.
