The SADC Council of Ministers has congratulated Zimbabwe for holding a credible election last month.
On the 23rd of August, Zimbabwe went to the polls during which President Emmerson Mnangagwa won 52.6% of the vote.
This Wednesday the SADC body held an extraordinary council of ministers virtual meeting during which Chairperson and Minister of External Relations of Angola Honourable Tete Antonio congratulated Zimbabwe for holding elections in an environment of peace.
“I wish to take this time to congratulate Zimbabwe on holding a free and fair elections in a climate of peace and tranquility and in accordance with the regional body’s principles and guidelines,” Hon Antonio said.
Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Ambassador Frederick Shava called on the regional body to take bold steps in resolving the situation in the DRC.
“I welcome the congratulations on behalf of my President and Honourable Chair, we should approve a budget that does not strain member states as they strive to meet their assessed contributions. We are all aware that all countries in the region are still reeling from the devastating effects of the covid-19 pandemic hence the need to be more pragmatic and realistic. However we must give the mission sufficient funds in order for it to be effective in dealing with the enormous challenge at hand.”
Meanwhile, the extraordinary SADC Council of Ministers meeting preceded an extraordinary SADC Organ Troika Summit which deliberated on various issues affecting the region.
