The Second Republic continues to walk the talk in revamping the health sector with the latest being the installation of an incinerator for waste disposal at Mutambara Mission Hospital in Chimanimani West.
Chimanimani District Medical Officer, Dr Donatas Mugari highlighted the impact of the facility which has helped to reduce costs while the medical institution is also assisting surrounding health centres with waste disposal.
“This is a critical development because before this facility we had to travel to Nyanga because that is where the processing capacity was. So we were facing transport costs every time we wanted to disburse our waste. We are surrounded by three districts, Chipinge, Buhera and Mutare so they can now benefit if theirs cannot process,” she said.
The Portfolio Committee on Local Government, Public Works, National Housing and Social Amenities has also been impressed by the development after touring the facility this Tuesday.
The committee’s chairperson Honourable Miriam Chikukwa said, “As the Parly committee, we are here to establish the adequacy of the fund concerning the magnitude of recorded damages following Cyclone Idai and COVID-19.”
“We are also here to ascertain the level of preparedness of the CPU should there be a recurrence of such disasters. I should say the committee is impressed because the hospital was facing challenges to dispose of waste but now they can and even support other health centres close by,” she added.
The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee also toured several Cyclone Idai-related projects in Chimanimani and Chipinge districts to assess and evaluate the impact of the projects on the community.
