Region Five Amateur Golf Championship tees off

Story by Anashe Murombedzi

Zimbabwe amateur golfers have arrived in Malawi for the Region Five Amateur Golf Championship which tees off in Lilongwe on Thursday.

Zimbabwe will be hoping to pick up from where they left off in Angola last year after emerging as the runners up to South Africa.

While neighbours, South Africa will be gunning to defend their title they will be well aware that Zimbabwe are no pushovers.

Top Royal Harare junior golfer, Michael Wallace headlines the squad alongside skipper, Tariro November, Tanaka Chatora and Panashe Mukumba.

Zimbabwe is among the seven Southern African nations participating at the tournament including hosts Malawi, defending champions South Africa, Zambia, Mozambique, Namibia, Eswatini and Angola.

The tournament tees off this Thursday at Lilongwe Golf Club and will run until Saturday, beginning with an 18-hole stroke play qualifier in the first round, which determines the seeding order for the match play knock-out stage.

Formally known as the Zone VI Golf Tournament, the annual event is the biggest amateur golf tournament among the Region 5 member countries.
