Peaceful environment expected to spur development

Story by Oleen Ndori

The church has pledged to continue supporting the second republic’s development agenda based on the peaceful environment prevailing in the country after the General Elections held in August.

A nation that prays together develops together.

This was the key message when the Zimbabwe Indigenous Interdenominational Council of Churches paid a courtesy call on President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House in Harare this Thursday.

Patron of the Zimbabwe Indigenous Interdenominational Council of Churches Bishop Nehemiah Mutendi pledged the church’s continued support to government developmental initiatives.

“We congratulate you and we have come on behalf of our churches with warm wishes on your win, we will continue to pray for you and your deputies as you seek to drive the country into the future,” he said.

After receiving a prayer from the church leaders, President Mnangagwa expressed gratitude for their continued support.

“I did not expect this, but I am heartened by your support and show of confidence in your government, elections are reflective of the will of the people and what you did today is a show of solidarity with the people,” he said.

The President noted that despite illegal sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by the West, the country’s developmental trajectory is on course.

He added, “Despite the imposition of sanctions we are moving forward building infrastructure in roads and schools, agricultural success spurring food security and this is a s a result of the support by the church therefore I give the church full democratic space to play its part.”

President Mnangagwa is on record that the church is a crucial government partner in nation-building and maintenance of peace.
