Nigerian afro-beats star D’banj arrives in Zim

Story by Colette Musanyera

Nigerian Afro-beats star, D’banj has arrived in Zimbabwe for a project with popular musician Roki bankrolled by local music promoter Passion Java.

Born Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo, the Nigerian musician whose last visit to Zimbabwe was in 2013, is ecstatic about rekindling romance with his Zimbabwean fans after a decade.

The “Oliver Twist” and “Fall in Love” hitmaker is set to collaborate with urban grooves luminary Roki.

D’banj said, “I was here a decade ago and I’m glad I’m back in Zimbabwe. I’m set to embark on a number of musical projects here with Zimbabwean musicians. Collaboration is a new competition so there is a need for us African musicians to work together.’’

Local music promoter, Passion Java who is bankrolling the project confirmed the development, adding that the move is aimed at empowering local artists.

Java noted, ‘‘I want to empower local musicians and such collaborations are also a platform for foreign artists to know how beautiful our country is.’’

The project is Roki’s second collaboration with an international artist, after he roped in internationally acclaimed rhumba heavyweight, Koffie Olomide and Tanzania’s Ray Vanny, on the hit Patati Patata in 2021.

The song has so far garnered over eight million views on YouTube.
