June deadline for construction works in Mt Hampden

Story by Bruce Chahwanda

VICE President General (Rtd) Dr Constantino Chiwenga has directed companies working on roads leading to the New Parliament Building that will host the SADC Summit in August to expedite construction works to meet the June deadline.

He said this on an assessment tour of the projects this Monday.

“So far there is tremendous progress happening and good work ethic among contractors. You must understand the importance of this project. In August Zimbabwe will host the SADC summit and it must be a success. We are ready to host the summit. Local companies are doing well and there is no way we can hire companies from outside,” he said.

He added, “We are now saying, you must work 24/7. There is no weekend or night and you must restructure yourselves. When we come here at night, we must see you working. If SADC says let’s do the summit earlier, we must be ready and we are ready to host them.”

The Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Honourable Felix Mhona is convinced that the construction companies are equal to the task.

“The ongoing works highlighted, show the commitment by the Ministry to deliver meaningful progress towards infrastructural development as enshrined in the National Development Strategy One and in support of the August SADC Summit,” he said.

The delegation toured Bindura road, Boulevard linking Bindura road and the New Parliament Building as well as the 12,6 kilometre urban section of Harare-Chirundu Road.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to assume Chairmanship of SADC at the August Summit.
