Story by Abigirl Tembo, Health Editor

Several Iranian companies which are into the manufacturing of medicines and medical equipment have expressed their eagerness to invest in Zimbabwe which has a large market for pharmaceuticals as the country imports more than 70% of its pharmaceutical requirements.

A visit to some of the companies which manufacture a wide range of products from agriculture and electronics to hospital equipment by the Zimbabwean delegation unearthed a group of potential investors.

Mr Mahdi Agharafiee of the Iran House of Innovation and Technology said, “Here we are ready to help the government and the people of Zimbabwe in any way. We are willing to have common cooperation. We have created this network to showcase our products to other countries. We have another branch in Kenya in the field of medical equipment. We are eager to establish a centre in Zimbabwe for manufacturing and knowledge base exchange.

“This centre can be a place for traders to go and buy medical equipment. The government of Iran will support the science deputies and we hope the Zimbabwe government will also support us. We can equip a hospital under the condition that the Ministry of Health can support us. There are many firms willing to equip the country’s hospital.”

“I would like to express our readiness to transfer our knowledge to your country,” noted Dr Halal Naeli of the Barkat Pharmaceutical Group.

Vice President General Retired Dr Constantino Chiwenga, who was leading the delegation, reiterated President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s call that Zimbabwe is open for business.

“Our government is willing to work with you. That’s the reason why we are here. And we will facilitate the registration process for it to be as smooth as possible. We are under sanctions from one person thus we should work together. We have also created economic zones,” he said.

Manufacturing 97% of its medicinal requirements, the Islamic Republic of Iran has also made great progress in the field of cancer treatment, transplantation and new and advanced treatment methods.
