THE country’s 43rd Independence celebrations set for Mount Darwin on Tuesday next week will leave a lasting legacy from newly developed and upgraded infrastructure in the town.
The government has expressed satisfaction with the progress made in developing infrastructure as Mount Darwin prepares to host the Uhuru celebrations.
An inter-ministerial delegation led by Local Government and Public Works Minister Honourable July Moyo inspected the sites and main venue for the celebrations this Wednesday.
Honourable July Moyo noted, “Major works were to prepare the ground and we are happy with the progress.
“There are other faculties that have been finished there are change rooms for where soccer teams that will play will change, not just for that day but we leave this as a heritage for the people of Mount Darwin and the Pfura rural district council area, that also is going to be finished.”
US$600 000 was availed to Pfura Rural District Council and the CMED to spruce up road infrastructure in the town.
Independence Technical Committee Chairman Engineer Emeson Chitsungo said, “In terms of infrastructure we are now a gear up because we only used to have only one stadium Pfura stadium.”
“We now have another which we are going to upgrade to suit even CAF standards, our roads, some roads were in a dire state, in terms of reclaiming them trying to reseal and upgrading them, some were not even surfaced and we have surfaced, the local authority snapped value in all this.”
One hundred buses have been provided to ferry people from across the province, with citizens from other parts of the country also expected to attend the independence celebrations.
Mashonaland Central Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Sen. Monica Mavhunga reiterated, “To the public, we say come in your numbers, Mash central let’s throng the stadium for celebrations and show the nation we are happy about our independence.”
“We urged the whole country to descend on the province and they should also copy what we have done because we have prepared a well-organised event.”
The independence celebrations come just a year after Mount Darwin was upgraded to a town board with an infrastructure upgrade cementing the town’s status.
The independence celebrations to be held under the theme, “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo/ Ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo” will be spiced up by a music gala which is headlined by Leonard Zhakata, Mark Ngwazi, and Sulumani Chimbetu among other musicians.
A football match pitting the country’s biggest clubs Highlanders and Dynamos will also be part of the big event.
