Industry development key in restoring Bulawayo’s industrial hub status

Story by Lisa Masuku

DEVELOPMENT of new industries has been cited as key in the quest to restore Bulawayo’s industrial hub status.

Captains of industry are of the view that the country’s second-largest city can be restored to its former glory by embracing new business models and leveraging new technology.

Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce Matabeleland Chapter Chairperson, Mr Mackenzie Dongo said, “ We have got an option of drawing up new industries which are in line with modern developmental plans.”

“We need to have a new small lean business model. We need to now embrace new business and we need to look at startups and fund them,” said Business Analyst, Mr Morris Mpala.

Industry and Commerce Minister Dr Sithembiso Nyoni says industrialists should take the lead in guiding the government on policies and measures to revive Bulawayo industries.

She said, “In the New Year we want to have a new thrust on how the industry should perform, but the leaders of industry are industrialists. They should tell us what they want for the industry to strive.”

Resuscitation of Bulawayo industries is being prioritised by the Second Republic as the country seeks to achieve an upper middle-income society by 2030.
