Hwange’s Kalope Dam yet to get significant inflows

THE El Nino weather phenomenon is taking its toll on Hwange’s Kalope Dam, with villagers lamenting the dwindling water levels, amid the little rains received so far in the area.

The dam is a crucial source of water in the St Mary’s and other surrounding areas of Hwange district, with villagers uneasy about the receding water levels.

The Zimbabwe National Water Authority water facility has been a key source of drinking water, irrigation of the nearby Kalope Irrigation Scheme, a lifeline to livestock and an important fishing point.

“This dam is very important to us. When we see water at this level, we are very worried,” said one of the locals.

Another added, “We are hoping that at least we will have rains even once so that will leave this dam overflowing.”

“Our livestock drink here and the irrigation gets its water from this dam. Can you imagine how it would be if we don’t get water this year,” added a resident.

The concerns raised by villagers are premised on the fact that water is their lifeline.

In a season where normal to below-normal rainfall has been forecast, there are fears projects in agriculture will be stalled, while the survival of livestock is at stake.
