Highlanders succumb to first defeat of the season

Story by Mthokozisi Dube, Sports Reporter

BULAWAYO giants Highlanders maintained pole position in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League despite succumbing to their first loss of the season at the weekend.

The much-anticipated Bulawayo derby lived up to its billing as 2015 champions Chicken Inn continued with their dominance over Highlanders.

It was an all too familiar story as Chicken Inn edged Bosso 2-1 to go five matches unbeaten against their more fancied opponents who last beat them in 2019.

With Highlanders having gone on a 6-match match unbeaten run, it was Joey Antipas’ men who emerged as the party spoilers to reduce the gap between the two sides to five points.

Bosso, however, remain on top of the log with 14 points from seven matches.

The Gamecocks are third after leapfrogging former champions FC Platinum who were held to a two-all draw by debutants Bikita Minerals on Saturday.

Zvishavane-based FC Platinum can, however, move to the top of the log if they are awarded three points from their abandoned match against CAPS United.

Ambitious, Bulawayo Chiefs gave no respect to expensively assembled Simba Bhora after walking away with three points following a one-nil victory over the Shamva-based side.

Back in the capital, Dynamos finally secured three with under-fire coach Genesis Mangombe heaving a sigh of relief after a one-nil victory over TelOne at Rufaro Stadium.

It was only Dynamos’ second victory of the campaign as they moved into the top half of the log with nine points.

In Mutare, Manica Diamonds continued with their resurgence after notching up their third victory on the trot.

The Gem Boys are now in sixth position just four points behind log leaders Highlanders after beating struggling CAPS United who fell to their fourth defeat of the season.

At the other end of the table, Hwange are still rooted at the basement with five points after a share of spoils with defending champions Ngezi Platinum Stars who have also had a subdued start to the season.

The bottom four clubs, Hwange, Herentals, Yadah and Ngezi Platinum Stars all failed to with this past weekend.
