Govt equipping ZRP ahead of general elections

Story by Memory Chamisa

Government is working on ensuring the Zimbabwe Republic Police is adequately equipped ahead of the general elections expected in July or August this year.

This comes as the organisation has begun preparations for the general elections, with the aim of ensuring a peaceful plebiscite.

During this Thursday’s Senate question and answer session, the Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Honourable Kazembe Kazembe revealed that the first batch of vehicles has since been delivered to the Zimbabwe Republic Police.

“As Government, we are aware of the challenges of the police force. As we speak Government is seized with the task of equipping the police and retooling them to enable full capacitation. Treasury has already procured the first batch of vehicles which have already been issued to various provinces for patrolling and response,” he said.

Government also gave an update on the Provincial Councils Bill, which is expected to be passed into law before elections.

The Deputy Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Honourable Marion Chombo said, “It was in anticipation that the bill would have sailed through but alas, we started to work on the bill to align with the constitution and it is in the Attorney General’s Office. It is being sped up so that it is passed into law before the elections are held. The bill also needs to recognise and put into effect the women’s quota.”

Another issue discussed in Parliament is the amount of money being paid to pensioners.

The Deputy Minister of Public Service Labour and Social Welfare, Honourable Lovemore Matuke stated, “Pensions fund is determined by contributions made by the employee. We want our pensioners to have a comfortable retirement, hence you notice that every time there is an adjustment for all civil service employees, pensioners’ payment is also reviewed to cushion everyone.”

The development comes as the government is implementing various measures to ensure economic stability in the country.
