Government through the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development is adopting the use of information communication technology tools to develop an e-agriculture system and attain a smart agriculture economy.
This Friday, Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister, Honourable Jenfan Muswere handed over ICT tools that include laptops to be distributed to agricultural extension officers across the country as part of the Smart Agriculture Digitisation Programme.
“We are looking at how we can digitalise the entire Agricultural sector. We want to empower the entire Agricultural information management ecosystem. These information systems will for example store data on rainfall patterns, land information management systems, livestock management systems,” said the minister.
The move is part of the digital transformation of the agricultural sector.
“The empowerment of extension officers with ICT tools and the adoption of smart Agricultural technologies will enable a seamless delivery of the Agricultural Food and Systems Transformation Strategy.”
This comes after the government launched another innovation in the form of a satellite known as ZIMSAT 1, which will help in addressing issues such as utilisation of space technologies and coming up with solutions for a sustainable agricultural sector.
