Government begins implementation of Heritage Based Curriculum Framework

Government has begun implementation of the Heritage Based Curriculum Framework, which will run until 2030.

In a circular seen by the ZBC News, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education clarified that the framework is meant to among other things foster life-long learning, prepare students for life and work in an innovation and knowledge driven economy, and orient pupils for participatory leadership.

According to the circular, the infant and junior schools’ modules consist of six learning areas that are Indigenous Language, English Language, mathematics, Science and Technology, Social Studies as well as Physical Education and Arts.

At Secondary level, Mathematics, English Language, Indigenous Language and Literature, Combined Science and Heritage Studies have been classified under core and compulsory Learning Areas, with studies allowed to choose at least three necessary elective subjects.

The upper secondary school level, that consists of Forms 5 and 6 has five career pathways that are Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), Visual and Performing Arts, Technical and Vocational Education and Training, Humanities and Commercials.

Non-examination classes will commence the School Based Projects in May 2024, with Grade 6, Form 3 and Form 5 2024 school-based projects set to be considered as part of coursework mark for ZIMSEC in 2025.

All 2024 examination classes will however continue with the old curriculum and its assessment modalities such as CALA.
