Good times set to roll at Shamva Gold Mine

Story by Theophilus Chuma, Investigative Editor

MINE workers at the country’s oldest mine, Shamva Gold Mine, are enjoying the benefits of the revival of the facility under the Second Republic.

A grand decision that has come with immense benefits, the revival of Shamva Gold Mine is proving to be a masterstroke in terms of both economic and social benefits.

Back in 2001 when the mine was closed due to incapacitation, hundreds of mine workers were left stranded.

Fast forward to 2020 when the mine was recommissioned by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the wheels of production are turning again at Gold Mine.

Never mind the gold ore coming out of the mine, the joy of re-opening the mine is appreciated by those who endured the long wait for this day.

“I lost my job when the mine was closed and my life took a very huge dip. It was difficult to survive and this was the case with many of my colleagues. But through the Second Republic, the government has allowed Kuvimba Mining House to reopen the mine. Once again, I am back at work and my life is restored. I am a happy man,” stated Mr Never Mhande.

Theirs are untold stories, yet they carry a deeper meaning to the social transformation enabled by the Second Republic.

Deep underground, Mhande’s story is echoed by his colleague, Chido Mutepfa.

“It’s been a huge development here in Shamva, especially seeing that many of us were out of employment when the mine was closed. But we thank Kuvimba Mining House for reopening the doors once again, I am now able to look after my family and work towards a great future,” Mhande asserted.
The government through its stake in Kuvimba Mining House has prioritised the revival of key mines which are now benefiting thousands of families across the country.
