GOLD deliveries to Fidelity Gold Refinery have reached 28 tonnes, as government chases a 40-tonne target for this year.
Government will continue to expedite gold mobilisation efforts to sustain the delivery of the yellow metal to Fidelity Gold Refinery, amid revelations that this year’s 40 tonne target set for this year may not be achieved due to adverse mining conditions mainly at small mining companies.
In an interview on the sidelines of the Gold Mobilisation Workshop held in Harare this Monday, Mines and Mining Development Minister Honourable Zhemu Soda revealed that 28 tonnes of the yellow metal have been delivered to Fidelity Gold Refinery to date.
“This workshop has witnessed the deployment of teams across the country to harness gold mobilisation in all major gold producing areas. As you know that we might not meet our target this year. Last year we achieved 35 tonnes and this year adverse weather conditions affected output at the mines,” said the Minister of Mines and Mining Development, Honorable Zhemu Soda.
Minister Soda also spoke on the key issue of safety in the mining industry in view of the prevalence of accidents this year, “The country witnessed a lot of accidents this year hence my Ministry is putting measures to enforce safe mining operations at the mines.”
The Fidelity Printers and Refiners has set up gold buying centres in major gold producing areas across the country to harness gold mobilisation and deliveries, especially from small scale miners who have emerged as the biggest producers of the yellow metal.
