THE Geo Pomona Waste Management soccer pitch hosted its first piece of action on Saturday as FC Porto Zimbabwe Academy faced off with CAPS United developmental side.
The exciting game marked the beginning of a new era for local football, attracting prominent figures like legendary coaches Sunday Chidzambga and Lloyd Chitembwe, who graced the exhibition match.
“This is the first match to be played at these facilities. So, this means teams will come and play at these facilities. This is giving back to the community, it’s our corporate social responsibility. In future, we are expecting other teams to come local or international,” said Geo Pomona Waste Management’s chief executive officer, Dilesh Nguwaya
Legendary coach Chidzambga, who recently got an honour from COSAFA lauded Geo Pomona for the initiative stressing the importance of grassroots development of football.
“Some of them are very good and you can see that we have got excess talent in this country, if they get chances to go overseas, they will do very well. We’ve got very good youngsters in this country.”
On the pitch, FC Porto Zimbabwe Academy displayed resilience, overcoming a one-goal deficit to secure a convincing 7-1 victory against the CAPS United developmental side.
The Geo Pomona Waste Management facility extends beyond just football. Recognising the importance of a holistic approach to sports development, the complex also boasts basketball and tennis courts, further enriching the local sporting landscape.
