Story by John Nhandara

A Zimbabwean delegation is attending a high-level meeting on strengthening capabilities of reducing road traffic accident-related injuries and deaths in Geneva, Switzerland.

Zimbabwe’s participation at the forum has become a perfect opportunity to adopt sustainable measures of reducing the number of deaths and injuries in road traffic accidents.

In his presentation at the high-level meeting, the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development, Honourable Felix Mhona said Zimbabwe has galvanised its national road safety management system by updating its regulatory framework to include regional and international recommendations.

“Zimbabwe is committed to cooperation under the United Nations system and to the adoption of international good standards and practices on road safety. As such, Zimbabwe joins the United Nations family in shaping the discourse underpinned by the critical question that is among the top policy priorities for governments around the world on how we can turn the second decade of action into a decade of delivery for road safety,” he said.

Minister Mhona also apprised delegates of the country’s commitment to embracing smart win-win partnerships and sustainable cooperation with multilateral stakeholders within the UN system.

“Let me reiterate Zimbabwe’s commitment towards the decade of action for road safety 2021 to 2030. We have no doubt that these targets will be met. We remain optimistic in confronting the seemingly insurmountable challenges which we face in achieving SDG target on road safety.”

The high-level meeting comes at a time the Zimbabwe road safety performance review has shown that over 35 000 accidents occur annually in the country, with over 1 800 deaths and more than 10 000 injuries being recorded annually.
