Design of the GeoPomona waste to energy plant underway in Europe

Story by Owen Mandovha

Plans to establish an energy plant for electricity generation at the Pomona dumpsite in Harare are progressing within the set timelines, with revelations the designing process is being conducted in Europe.

The 22 megawatt biopower project is expected to enter into commercial operation in 2025 in the wake of indications that much groundwork has been covered.

Geo-Pomona Waste Management executive chairman and chief executive officer, Mr Dilesh Nguwaya says the designs of the power plant are currently being done in Europe.

“We are within our timelines and we are confident that we will be functional by 2025. Currently, the designs are in Europe and that is a very huge stage in terms of moving ahead with the project,” he said.

Mr Nguwaya also revealed the design of the waste to energy plant which is already underway in Europe will be installed in the third year of the project.

Municipal solid waste will be used as a feedstock to power the project, with various stakeholders impressed by the fact that it will address solid waste management issues that have been affecting the City of Harare for years.
