Chevrons kick off T20 World Cup Qualifier on the wrong foot

Chevrons kick off T20 World Cup Qualifier on the wrong foot

Story by Lawrence Trusida, Sports Editor

THE Zimbabwe Cricket side, the Chevrons got their 2024 T20 World Cup qualifying campaign underway on a poor note after a disappointing seven-wicket defeat to hosts Namibia at the Wanderers Cricket Ground this Wednesday.

The International Cricket Council T20 World Cup Africa Qualifiers will see the top two teams out of the seven participants in Namibia making it to next year’s World Cup to be co-hosted by the United States and the West Indies.

Zimbabwe’s quest to be part of the cast at the World Cup started on the wrong foot after the Chevrons were outclassed by hosts Namibia this Wednesday.

The match was eagerly anticipated as it featured the top two teams in the competition but it turned out to be a one-sided affair after the hosts dominated their more fancied opponents with bat and ball.

Namibia won the toss and sent in the Chevrons to bat and that decision was vindicated as they had the visitors at 18 for three inside four overs.

Even though Craig Ervine and new captain Sikander Raza had a 55-run partnership, the damage was already done and the Chevrons kept on losing wickets at regular intervals managing a below-par 132 runs for eight.

In reply, Namibia were ruthless and reached the total in just 14 overs to collect maximum points and a big net run rate that might come in handy later in the tournament.

The Chevrons have no time to lick their wounds as they face Tanzania this Thursday looking to bounce back to winning ways.

In other matches played this Wednesday, Kenya beat Rwanda by 17 runs, while Uganda thumped Tanzania by eight wickets.
