Chaos in opposition as party fields double candidates in some constituencies

Story by John Nhandara

Chaos continues to reign supreme in the opposition Triple C party after it fielded more than two candidates in several constituencies at the Nomination Court this Wednesday.

Appearing at the High Court, CCC leader Nelson Chamisa put on a brave face despite what is clearly a sign of disharmony in the opposition outfit.

Chamisa played down the fielding of more than one candidate in more than 10 constituencies.

“We don’t have any double candidates except for certain individuals in Masvingo who stole some papers Tuesday and forged signatures. So, it’s not a case of double candidates but fraudulent activities. It’s a criminal thing that has been reported to the police. We don’t foresee any problem of double candidates because we only have two signatories, and they cannot have double candidates,” he said.

The party fielded over one candidate in 13 constituencies in Harare and three constituencies in Bulawayo, while it also failed to field candidates for over 50 local authority seats countrywide.

Political analyst, Mr Gibson Nyikadzino says the chaos is testimony to a lack of democratic principles within the party.

“It shows that there is a lack of discipline in the political party because as we have seen so far, fielding of double candidates. This is a result of a lack of employing democratic principles of fairness, accountability, and transparency in the nomination proved under the pretext of what they term the doctrine of strategic ambiguity which in itself is a divide-and-rule tactic that has been used to centralise all political power to Nelson Chamisa,” he said.

Others have questioned the opposition party’s pedigree and capacity to lead.

The nomination court sat across the country this Wednesday to receive nomination papers for presidential, national assembly and local authority candidates ahead of the 23 August general elections.
