A 25-megawatt solar power plant constructed by Centragrid Private Limited in Nyabira is complete and ready to feed electricity to the national grid by next month.
Centragrid (Pvt) Limited is one of the independent power producers licensed by the government to contribute 6 000 megawatts by 2030 and the company is moving with speed with its expansion programme.
Centragrid Solar Station’s head of business development Mrs Odellia Magwegwende said, “We started to supply the national grid in 2019 after completing our first phase – the first phase has the capacity of 2.5 megawatts- but as you can see our phase two is now complete and we will be feeding 25 megawatts into national grid – which is enough to cover Chinhoyi and surrounding towns, farms and mines.”
Once the 25-megawatt plant is commissioned next month, plans are on the table to expand the power station to 100 megawatts by 2030.
“We are putting the final touches for the commissioning of this plant. We plan to expand from 25 megawatts to 100 megawatts as enshrined in our contract, this will also ensure that we keep over 300 workers here at work,” said Centragrid Solar Station’s chief executive officer, Mr Victor Utedzi.
If the commissioning of the solar plant goes according to plan by July or August, the power line will be ready to supply electricity to the national grid.
