BSPZ resource centre to promote educational development in Chiredzi

Story by Gay Matambo

CHIREDZI District is set to establish a modern Better Schools Programme Zimbabwe (BSPZ) education resource centre, with the first phase expected to be complete by June this year.

The Chiredzi District Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education embarked on the construction of a modern resource centre in 2014 with the assistance of community members.

The first phase of the complex which is almost complete will house a library which will cater for surrounding schools and the community.

It will also include a board room, computer lab and offices for staff members.

School heads who spoke to the ZBC News crew concur the resource centre will promote educational development in the district.

“This building will benefit our teachers as they will be converging here to get the necessary information and knowledge to better themselves in terms of teaching and this will improve the grades of the learners,” said one of the headmasters.

Another added, “We will have a library which is going to be used by the secondary sector and the primary sector and also stretch up to the tertiary level. We will also have an ICT lab and as you may know, there is a need for everyone to be ICT compliant hence it is going to benefit us in a lot of ways.”

“This project will develop the education sector in Chiredzi in various ways. The pass rate in schools is going to increase through access to the Internet, e-books and so forth,” said another headmaster.

Chiredzi District Schools Inspector Mrs Petronella Nyangwe weighed in saying the project is a result of commitment, hard work and generosity of the community.

‘The Primary objective of the BSPZ is to train teachers so that they can improve their teaching and learning in the classrooms. We want to equip our teachers with the necessary resources that they need to be better teachers. We will have a section for the learners and the community as well. We are also going to embark on Phase 2 funds permitting. It has been a huge sacrifice and I want to thank the parents of Chiredzi who have primarily been funding this programme,” said Chiredzi District Schools Inspector, Mrs Petronella Nyangwe.

Apart from serving as a training and capacity-building centre for teachers and learners, the resource centre is also expected to enhance the implementation of the competence-based education curriculum.
