All set for ZRU elections

Story by Lawrence Trusida, Sports Editor

THE stage is set for elections that will usher in new leadership at the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU).

The elections will be held during the ZRU Annual General Meeting (AGM) slated for the Sports and Recreation Commission boardroom in Harare this Saturday.

The elective AGM will see a new board being elected into office for the next four years.

While the contestants will be nominated at the AGM, incumbent president Aaron Jani, a former player is seeking re-election.

Gerald Sibanda, another former national team star, is also challenging for an administrative post while current vice president, Losson Mtongiza is seeking an elevation to the highest office.

The Zimbabwe Rugby Union has announced that all affiliates will be allowed to vote, save for Primary School and Tertiary Institution representatives who are not in good standing with the union.

The union paid tribute to the outgoing executive.

“I think we all understand that these guys came through at a very difficult time in Zimbabwe Rugby but they managed to get the love back and they have lured sponsorship for the Sables.

“The environment has been difficult but when you see banks and big corporates jostling to sponsor, it means they did well and we have to pay tribute to them as we welcome a new executive,” said ZRU’s chief executive officer, Sifiso Made.

Former Harare Province Chairperson Joe Kawonza, former Women’s Chairperson Abigail Mnikwa and current vice-president South Martin Shone are vying for the two vice presidents’ positions.
