17-year-old steals father’s gun, robs cellphone dealer

Story by Fungai Jachi, Courts Reporter

A 17-year-old boy from Braeside, Harare, who allegedly stole his father’s gun before using it in a robbery, has been charged with armed robbery.

The boy allegedly stole his father’s gun which was in the car before he connived with his friends to rob a cell phone dealer.

It is alleged that they lured the complainant pretending to be potential buyers of iPhones, which he was selling.

It is further alleged that the boy and his co-accused went on to rob the complainant when he arrived before fleeing.

The court heard that a public chase resulted in the accused taking a girl hostage before threatening to shoot her.

He allegedly went on to fire a gunshot in the air as a getaway strategy.

The 17-year-old appeared in court this Thursday facing charges of theft, robbery and illegal possession of a firearm before being released into his mother’s custody.

Meanwhile, a 39-year-old Harare car dealer who allegedly smuggled high-end cars into the country before illegally fixing government number plates on the vehicles and selling them to unsuspecting buyers appeared in court facing four counts of fraud.

It is alleged that the accused also forged registration books for the cars.

He was released on US$800 bail.
