Zvishavane man axes fellow villager to death

 Story by Courage Bushe

A 28-year-old man from rural Zvishavane has appeared in court facing charges of murder after axing a fellow villager to death.

It is alleged that during the night of 19 March this year, Tavonga Zhou of Mhepo village under Chief Mataruse visited the now deceased Prince Makowa’s homestead carrying an axe.

The court heard that a misunderstanding ensued between Zhou and Makowa before the accused struck the deceased twice on the leg and once on the arm with the axe before fleeing the scene.

It is further alleged that the deceased sustained deep cuts and was rushed to Zvishavane District Hospital for treatment, but due to the seriousness of the injuries, he was transferred to Gweru Provincial Hospital where he later died.

The accused applied for bail, but the state opposed the appeal on the grounds that he may escape while there are fears that the community may institute instant justice.

He was remanded in custody to the 19th of this month for the continuation of trial.
