Suspected copper cable thieves nabbed

Story by Yolanda Moyo

THREE suspected copper cable thieves have been arrested in Bulawayo, leading to the recovery of copper cables worth over US$6 000.

The three suspects, Tedious Maseko, Tedious Mufari, and Thabani Moyo were arrested in Bulawayo after being found in possession of copper cables, in what has become an increasingly common crime in the city.

The suspects were arrested after police received a tip-off from a member of the public regarding a South African registered Quantum vehicle that was suspected to have been loaded with cables in the Nketa 9 suburb.

Police detectives teamed up with ZETDC loss control officers and swiftly reacted to the information and managed to arrest Tedious Maseko who led them to a white Toyota Quantum which was parked outside the yard with a trailer that was covered with a tent.

The total value of the recovered copper cables is US$6 400.

The copper cables were stashed inside plastic containers and motor vehicle wheels with some wrapped in black industrial plastic papers in a trailer.

Zimbabwe Republic Police Acting Spokesperson for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said the consignment was South Africa bound.

The power utility company, ZESA, records losses of millions of dollars each year due to copper cable theft and vandalism.
