Zvishavane artificial insemination programme to boost national herd

Story by Courage Bushe

SMALL scale livestock farmers from the Masunda and Vaka area of Zvishavane have benefited from an artificial insemination programme rolled out by the government and its development partners for the ongoing restocking drive.

The Second Republic has put in place several measures to boost the national herd, and this includes an artificial insemination programme from which small-scale farmers are benefiting.

The benefits of the programme were summed up by Chief Masunda who also commended the Second Republic for rolling out people-oriented development programmes that have become viable empowerment tools at the grassroots level.

“We thank the able leadership of our President for remembering his people with this kind of programme. In the previous years, our farmers faced a lot of challenges but I am very confident that with this kind of programme, we will boost our district herd,” he said.

The government is confident that the programme will provide room for skills transfer and expertise, which will boost the livestock sector.

“You will note that this is a cattle country where most people rely on livestock production as a source of livelihood. We must improve the quality of the cattle for them to get value for their money and to also enhance the breeds,” said Zvishavane District Veterinary Officer, Dr Claudias Maguranyanga.

The livestock sector contributes significantly to the inclusive growth and development of the national economy by boosting productivity.
