TRADITIONAL grains have transformed the lives of over 30 000 communal farmers in Chivi following a successful farming season and government support.

With more than 50 000 farmers in Chivi having benefitted from Pfumvudza/Intwasa inputs under the Presidential Inputs Scheme in the 2022/2023 agriculture season, many who focused on traditional grains are testifying of a good harvest.

Farmers who attended a Pfumvudza field day held in Chivi said the initiative of promoting traditional grains in dry regions is proving to be a game changer as many are now food secure.

Despite Chivi being a dry area, the government is working on establishing irrigation schemes in the area to enhance agricultural activities.

“Chivi generally is a dry area receiving normal to below normal rains, however, the government is working on establishing irrigation schemes around the area to ensure food security and currently, we have five irrigation schemes established and some rehabilitated,” said Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister, Honorable Ezra Chadzamira.

Several farmers who did well during the 2022/2023 agriculture season were awarded.

The government under the Presidential Inputs Scheme and the Rural industrialisation programme is working on ensuring communal farmers are food secure.
