The National Employment Council (NEC) for the catering industry has taken a significant step towards ensuring the well-being of its workforce by launching multiple documents, including the Occupational Safety, Health and Environmental Policy.

The hotel and catering industry continues to record a high number of occupational injuries and fatalities including diseases, hence the National Employment Council for the catering industry launched the occupational safety, health and environmental policy this Thursday to protect the workers.

NEC for the catering industry Secretary General, Mrs Tendai Mukaviri Churu shared some of the challenges the industry is facing.

“The documents we have launched today are meant to protect our workers who are in the hotel and catering industry. Also other documents we have launched will help in the industry, the information will be accessed easily,” she said.

The Registrar of Labour in the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Mrs Shebba Gweshe said the document is critical in protecting workers against work related injuries and fatalities.

She said, “Ministry supports the creation of this magazine and offers its congratulations to the NEC for this innovative idea. As a ministry, we are pleased that the NEC Catering Industry in Zimbabwe has concluded a sectorial Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Policy which buttresses the work of labour inspectors by ensuring that all organisations in the sector have a manual that drives minimum provisions for health and safety at the workplace.”

The event also saw the NEC catering industry launching the electronic levy system and online magazine meant to improve its operations.
