THE Zimbabwe Republic Police has dismissed as fake, claims that it recently intercepted arms in Matabeleland South Province.

This follows recent social media reports claiming the interception and recovery of a large consignment of weapons in West Nicholson.

Zimbabwe Republic Police Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told ZBC News this Saturday that they never intercepted any weapons.

“We are dismissing the allegations circulating on social media that we found a truck with firearms. As Police we never heard such a report and as such we are dismissing it with the contempt it deserves and we want to urge the public to ignore it,” he said.

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi also said Police are investigating the motive behind the circulation of such information.

“As Police, we are investigating the motive behind circulating such messages on social media, it is so disturbing to note that some individuals are behind such,” he added.

The report comes at a time when the nation is witnessing a surge in the number of armed robbery cases with the recent one taking place at Newlands Shopping Centre in Harare where more than US$80 000 was stolen by armed robbers.
