The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) has vowed to continue implementing various measures to protect inmates, prison staff, and their dependents from COVID-19.
With the prison population currently standing at 18 000, ZPCS is working on modalities to ensure the protection of its staff and inmates from COVID-19.
This emerged when the International Committee of the Red Cross donated a consignment of personal protection equipment to the tune of 120 thousand United States dollars to ZPCS Chikurubi staff hospital this Thursday.
The consignment was received by the Secretary for Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Mrs Virginia Mabhiza, and ZPCS Commissioner-General Retired Major General Paradzai Zimondi, who said the donation will no doubt improve ZPCS health care system.
“On the same note may I advise you that as a department, the ZPCS is already undertaking risk assessment and management, fumigation exercises and response guidelines within institutions across the country,” said Mrs Mabhiza.
“It is for this reason that I acknowledge that the donation has come at the right time and will enforce all efforts that are ongoing in the containment of COVID- 19 within the ZPCS cantonment areas and prison institutions,” said Retired Major General Paradzai Zimondi.
ICRC Head of Mission, Cherine Pollin said individual efforts cannot fully combat COVID-19.
“We have seen it fit to donate these goods today so that we fight COVID-19 together. The goods are worth 120 thousand United States dollars.”
The donation comprises of disposable plastic aprons, hand sanitizers, and plastic pedal bins.
