THE Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC) has joined the world in commemorating the International Olympic Day.
It is set aside to celebrate the day the International Olympic Committee was founded in 1894.
The International Olympic Committee-IOC and the World Health Organisation, WHO, this Tuesday created the world’s largest 24- hour digital Olympic workout to celebrate the Olympic Day.
Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC) Programmes Officer, Newman Gomendo spoke on how Olympians continue to play a pivotal role in motivating and inspiring people around the world.
“Athletes the world over have kept us mindful especially during this COVID-19 induced lockdown. It is however imperative to celebrate this day which marked the formation of the International Olympic Committee in 1894. The theme #StayStrong #StayHealthy #StayAlive, resonates well with the situation that we found ourselves in, that is the lockdown period where there are virtually no activities going on. We encourage athletes to keep on keeping on and follow virtual training guidelines in order to keep shape and move on until things normalise,” said Gomendo.
This year the IOC and WHO are advocating for people to be active in their daily routines and improve their health through sport.
The IOC was formally established on the 23rd of June in 1894 through the efforts of French educator and historian, Pierre de Coubertin to promote competitive sport as a revival of the ancient Olympic Games.
