LATEST: ZNA Commander, Lt Gen Edzai Chimonyo declared national hero

THE late Zimbabwe National Army Commander, Lieutenant General Edzai Absalom Chimonyo, has been declared a national hero, the pronouncement was made by President Emmerson Mnangagwa when he went to pay his condolences to the Chimonyo family in Greystone Park in Harare this Friday afternoon.
The late Army Commander whose chimurenga name was “edzai mabhunu” died on Thursday Morning at the Avenues Clinic in Harare after a long battle with lung cancer.
Burial arrangements will be announced in due course.
ZNA Commander Lt-Gen Chimonyo participated in the liberation struggle and has held a number of appointments between 1980 and 2008 in various brigades, Army and Defence Headquarters before his transfer to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs where he was appointed ambassador to Tanzania until December 2017.
He trained at Mgagao, Tanzania, in 1974. he was deployed in Gaza province in 1976 as a Sectorial Commander.
He rose through the ranks of ZANLA from being an instructor to a member of general staff and subsequently a member of the high command.
In 1976 he led a force that opened sector 2 in Gaza. In 1978 he was deployed as ZANU’s deputy chief representative and military attache in Zambia until the attainment of independence in 1980.
Lt Gen Chimonyo assumed his current position on December 18, 2017 when he took over from General Philip Valerio Sibanda, who was promoted to be the Commander Defence Forces.
