GOVERNMENT says the engagement and re-engagement policy has achieved success with John Deere Agriculture Mechanisation Facility being a case in point.
The progress made since government embarked on the re-engagement and engagement policy came under scrutiny in Parliament recently with Norton legislator, Temba Mliswa questioning the logic for the new dispensation to continue dealing with USA which imposes sanctions on Zimbabwe willy-nilly.
“Government, I mean the new dispensation has embarked on Mantra Zimbabwe is open for business, and the minister of foreign affairs says it is a success, but my question is how can it be a success when the relations between us and the USA is one way, where we release money for agriculture equipment, why is it that we continue dealing with America which continues to impose sanctions on us? Recently our state security minister was put on sanctions,” he said.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Retired Lieutenant General Dr Sibusiso Moyo says Zimbabwe will continue engaging with all weather friends like China, Russia and others but re-engagement process with West has opened new areas of interest and convergence.
“There is now conversation with the USA and Europe following the new dispensation’s re-engagement policy, while it is the responsibility of government to re-engage, it is also the ultimate responsibility for all of us members of parliament to support that, there has been progress on the FDI inflows even from our international partners, and like the USA we had the agricultural mechanisation program, there is the Botoka in the pipeline and others. While we cement relations with our traditional allies, it is important that they also want to see our risk profile being managed. So thus why we are on a re-engagement drive with USA although our major desire is to see them lifting the outdate sanctions,” he said.
However, the Speaker of Parliament, Advocate Jacob Mudenda requested the Minister of foreign Affairs and International trade to present a comprehensive statement with break downs of the Foreign Direct Investments achieved since the adoption of re-engagement and engagement policy.
