The Zimbabwe Senior Swimming National Championships have started on a high note with expectations that it will play a big part in polishing the country’s team to the Confédération Africaine de Natation (CANA) Zone 4 games.
About 200 swimmers are battling it out in different heats at the Bulawayo City Pools in an event that is set to run until Sunday.
With the competition also being used to polish the already selected Zimbabwean team for the Cana Zone 4 gala set for Botswana between the 20 and 23 January, the Zimbabwe Swimming Chairperson, Tracey Doorman is full of confidence that there will be positive performances by the local swimmers.
“We have been very pleased. We have had some excellent times. I am not sure of any records that have been broken as we have a couple of procedures that have to be followed for checking with records but we have a lot of personal bests for our swimmers and all the kids have had a great time and they swam their hearts out,” Doorman said.
All Zimbabwean CANA swimmers are however expected to take part at this national event if they are to be eligible to make the grade at the zonal meet.
The ongoing gala has also revealed that there is an increased number of younger age group swimmers with a need to retain them if the sport is to attain its desired positive future.
