THE ZIMBABWE cricket team crashed to a 10-wicket defeat in the first test against Sri-Lanka which ended at Harare Sports Club this Thursday. The Zimbabwe cricket team showed heart in the first test, but in the end, experience prevailed for Sri-Lanka who registered a 10 wicket win.
Resuming with an overnight score of 30 for no loss and trailing by 127 runs Zimbabwe were faced with the task of wiping out the tourists lead and building up a significant score on the board with Brian Mudzinganyama and Brian Chari at the crease.
Sri-Lanka however came out guns blazing with 3 quick wickets seeing Zimbabwe struggling at 41 for 3.
Brendan Taylor and Sean Williams would then combine for a partnership of 79 runs but when Taylor and Williams fell for 38 and 39 after lunch Zimbabwe’s hopes of salvaging at least a draw suffered a huge blow.
Although Regis Chakabva fought gallantly in a 142 ball knock of 27 runs Sri-Lanka’s experience in the end carried them through as the hosts were bowled out for 170 runs having built a lead of just 13 runs.
With an easy task of scoring 14 runs to win Sri-Lanka’s opening partnership of Oshada Fernando and Dimuth Karunaratne needed just 18 balls to reach the required target of 14 to win.
Following the 10 wicket loss Zimbabwe will now shift focus to the second test which gets underway on the 27th.
