The extravaganza which is the World Cup of women Tennis will see 12 national teams competing for honours over a week with more than 60 athletes expected to grace the event.
This is actually a great move as will help our tennis players to get more exposure when they compete with big nations. It is also the association’s drive to see the growth of the women’s game hence the participation in the Billie Jean Cup, said Tennis Zimbabwe president Biggie Marira .
He also said Tennis Zimbabwe has already secured sponsors for the event.
Our preparations are already in motion and we are delighted that the sponsors for the trip have come on board. We are hoping that this is going to be one of the greatest initiatives from our side and believe me, our game is on the growth trajectory, added Marira.
Team Zimbabwe is made up of experienced players; Valeria and Kimberly Bhunu who will represent the country alongside three juniors.
Zimbabwe competed in the first Federation Cup in 1966 beating Austria in a 3-0 clean sweep with Patricia Walkden recording the first victory for the team in the opening match.
