A 38-member Zimbabwe Swimming delegation left the country this Tuesday ahead of the African Swimming Confederation (CANA) Zone four swimming championships which get underway this Thursday in Zambia.
The team was selected at the national swimming championships in Harare and Bulawayo before testing their pedigree at the South Africa National Junior Championships.
While the CANA Zone four championships which get underway on Thursday in Zambia will give team Zimbabwe an opportunity to compete with the best the main target is to develop athletes for the next Olympic cycle.
For Government, the sheer number of athletes representing the country is something to celebrate.
“As a ministry, we are proud that Zimbabwe has been able to put together a team of 38 that will participate at CANA 4 competitions. For us, it’s considered a developmental competition because our target is to get to the continental and the Olympics,” said Dr Thokozile Chitepo – Permanent Secretary Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation.
The delegation will be joined by four other athletes that were participating in the South Africa National Junior Championships this Wednesday.
Zimbabwe is among 13 countries that will battle for honours at the Zone four championships.
