THE Deputy Minister for Lands, Agriculture, Water, Climate and Rural Resettlement, Vangelis Haritatos joined the virtual Africa Finance Ministers’ Meeting on Sanitation and Water for All (SWA)., this Wednesday.

Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Professor Mthuli Ncube, also joined the meeting.

In a statement written on his Facebook page, Minister Haritatos said: “The dialogue presented a short but precise piece on the support that Government has been giving for water and sanitation.”

“The dialogue was critical especially now when we are fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, whilst arresting the further spread through improved hand-washing and upholding hygiene,” he added.

He explained that the current covid-19 pandemic has demonstrated the interconnections of health, social and economic systems.

“It has also brought out the need for multi-stakeholder involvement from different sectors and at different levels from the grassroots to policy levels.

“This forum addressed SDG 6 namely access to basic, universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all; basic sanitation services; and basic hygiene.”

The government has supported water and hygiene through availing funding to municipalities and devolution programmes nationwide.
