THE Zimbabwe Under -19 Netball team, the Young Gems have hit the ground running in preparation of the Africa Union Sports Council Region Five Youth Games slated for Malawi in December.
COVID-19 was a huge obstacle for the Under-19 netball team’s participation in the Africa Union Youth Sports Council region five games in Lesotho last year.
With the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education still to clear schools to participate in sport after the COVID-19 pandemic, the Young Gems technical team has taken advantage of school holidays to get things going.
“It is very important to have a pool of players to just select from instead of rushing through things and selecting not the best but what is available, so after scouting we took advantage of the school holidays to make sure we camp because we’ll be able to select the best as we’ll have the final camp. We were not able to go last time and that was not very good for us so we need to upgrade our rankings,” said Young Gems Coach-Simbarashe Mlambo.
Zimbabwe has generally performed well in netball at the youth games after bagging a gold and silver medal in the last two editions before failing to travel to the Lesotho games.
