World No 1 Ashleigh Barty announces shock retirement

Ashleigh Barty has stunned the tennis world by announcing her immediate retirement from tennis at the age of 25, only two months after her momentous Australian Open triumph.

The three-times grand slam champion announced her decision on social media this morning, admitting that she does not have “the physical drive, the emotional want and everything it takes to challenge yourself at the top level anymore”. She bows out at the pinnacle of the sport as the world No 1, after spending 114 consecutive weeks at the top of the rankings.

In January Barty produced one of Australia’s great national sporting moments by becoming the first home singles player to win the Australian Open since Chris O’Neil in 1978. She lifted her first major singles trophy
