FINANCE and Economic Development Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube says government is paying 180 million Zimbabwe dollars a month towards the mealie meal subsidy while working on a voucher system to ensure that intended beneficiaries of the social protection programme benefit.
Professor Ncube says the social protection programme is set to be extended to other basic commodities to cushion Zimbabweans from exorbitant prices being charged by businesses.
Speaking in Harare this Friday, Minister Ncube also revealed that the government is seeking to ensure that the programme is transparent.
Regarding the availability of fuel during the festive season, Professor Ncube said more allocations will be made to suppliers of the commodity through lines of credit facilities.
On the cash supply situation, the Minister said higher denominations will be introduced during the first half of 2020 to complement the current cash replenishment programme.
Government has put in place a number of social programmes which are designed to cushion people against high prices of services and goods. These include the subsidised mass public transport system with ZUPCO and removal of import duty on some food stuffs.
